i haven't made a post in a month, i haven't left my bed for eight days straight...

me so lazy...

the juan maclean - love is in the air (mock & hoof remix)

i haven't updated in a while, and while it's due mostly to my own laziness, there's more to it than that. you see, a few weeks ago i dj'd at the (totally fucking awesome) juan maclean show at the crocodile, and i was terribly disappointed with the small turn-out. i know there's lots of factors at play (lack of radio airplay, high ticket price, lame venue, 21+ show, etc.), but i couldn't help but feel that seattle just didn't fucking get it. the juan maclean record, while not uniformly amazing, is really good, ranging from slow, melancholy ambiance to jacking punk-house anthems in the space of its nine tracks. the live show shed new light on juan's recordings, transforming even the more mellow songs into full fledged floor rockers.

so where was everybody?

my thoughts:

a couple years ago we saw this amazing convergence of rock kids and dance music; bands were getting recorded and remixed by top notch producers, indie rock kids were hitting the dancefloors in droves, every dude in a band was busting out his ipod behind a pair of untouched turntables and playing dj, basement shows were being capped off by living room dance parties if not replaced by them altogether. it was a fun time, but it seems that wave has crested. now the rock kids are back at the (increasingly monotonous) rock shows; the bands are rocking out a well-worn pastiche of glam, new wave/post punk, and garage; the genre fucking "mash-up" aesthetic is dead, or has at least become completely suburban; everybody's sick of coke (or should be); blah blah blah.

so while there's still tons of great dance music out there, it seems that less and less of it is catering to the "rock" crowd, or maybe it's just that the hipster kids that used to fill out the club have moved on to hip hop for a while, and what's left is the crowd that always wanted to dance to this shit whether it was getting media hype or not...

chicken lips - white dwarf (the juan maclean remix)

whatever the case, i was in a funk, but i have come out the other side of it determined not to give in, but to be part of the solution. i will continue to play quality dance music for the discerning kids that wanna dance, and fuck the haters and the sleepers...

captain comatose - up in flames (fucking in the streets 'acid burn' remix)

here's a work in progress of mine: an easy acid track dropped under the captain's a capella. the original track is available on the full length of the same name, and the 12" comes with a great remix by glove. you can buy their stuff from the label playhouse. these guys make goofy disco/funk that's both funny and fun but also full of attitude, like lcd soundsystem with junior senior's sense of humor, perhaps.

christopher just - i'm a disco dancer (john tejada remix)

this comes on a new 12" from international deejay gigolos, but the original track is actually really old-it was originally released in 1997. the new release also features a remix from another hot producer of the moment, misc. the tejada version features vocals reworked by qzen, whose voice is also featured on the tejada track "sweat (on the walls)" as well as others. the vocals are cheeky, improvisational, and fun; tejada's minimal and immaculate production dances on a disco-light grid.

is this man ready for a rap career?

kevin federline has a new single streaming on his myspace music page, and no, i'm not posting it. some copyrights just aren't worth infringing.

of course, for $19.99 you can do the infringing on your own. check out wiretap, an excellent application that allows you to save streamed audio as mp3.

for me, the weirdest thing by far is that the track is produced by disco d, he of the disney-friendly anthems "fuck me on the dancefloor," "you need another drink," and now this:

disco d - let's hug it out bitch (max pask remix)

credit is where credit is due: i only know this shit because of nick sylvester's excellent blog, riff raff. check his shit out for the complete breakdown on this monstrosity.

dub narcotic sound system - fuck shit up

here's a great song from dub narcotic sound system, taken from one of their earlier 7"s (props to brian weber on organ). great stream-of-consciousness, tongue-in-cheek fun with calvin johnson.

simian mobile disco - the count

ok, no politics this time, just the good shit.

simian mobile disco are the remaining half of the band simian, slimmed down to produce some white hot dance jams. this is kind of an older track of theirs, taken from the excellent kitsune-x compilation.

their myspace page has a couple other tracks available for download, plus a sweet go! team remix.

that's it, enjoy!

ps. if you like these tracks, please show your support by purchasing their stuff.

justice vs simian - never be alone (download)

justice is the production/remixing team of xavier de rosnay & gaspard auge from paris, france. this track, a collaboration with simian, was my first exposure to them. since then, i've come to enjoy their remix work for bands such as death from above 1979, scenario rock, soulwax, and others.

but here's the problem:

justice is fucking christian (can i get a WTF?)

check the myspace page, see the stroboscopic cross, notice the genre (electro/christian/club). check out the biblically themed song titles:

justice - waters of nazareth (download)

now, i'm a staunch atheist, and a non-practicing anarchist. i think religion is fucking make believe bronze-age bullshit passed down to enforce antiquated morals and justify hierarchical power structures. i respect everyone's right to believe what they wish, but i have a deeply rooted disdain for any organization (religious or otherwise) that wants to tell me how to live.

but i'm also a dj, and dude makes some dance floor killers. so how do i reconcile my bass-loving booty with my godless, sinful brain?

are justice "cool christians" like moby or bono? like them (and jesus), they use a one-word, two-syllable name. or are they lame, proselytizing, homophobic, right-wing, christians? maybe it's different in france...

next post: simian mobile disco.

the aislers set - christmas song

perfect twee, snowy x-mas music from san francisco's (now sadly defunct) aislers set. i saw them play a couple times back when i was living in olympia, going to evergreen, and basically wearing a lot of silly sweaters at a lot of silly indie-pop-underground shows. this band is for crushes. buy their records here and here.

murder city devils - dead by christmas

only posthumous posts today. here we have the late, great murder city devils covering the even later (greater? meh) hanoi rocks. this was released as a pretty limited 7" just in time for stocking stuffing back in '99, and i actually gave a copy to my first girlfriend for christmas. what sweet, suburban seattle punks we were.

so everyone's pretty familiar with pretty girls make graves, the post-devils project of derek fudesco and andrea zollo (of the mcd tangent groups area 51 and death wish kids), but cody willis, dann galluci, and spencer moody are busy these days too...

cody currently beats drums for big business, featuring jared warren from karp. the two of them are relocating to LA from seattle, and are joinging the lineup of veteran noise-rockers the melvins.

dann recently left modest mouse to focus on his semi-solo project, a gun called tension, i hear they're busy working on a new record and making plans to tour early in the new year.

spencer is doubly busy these days. he fronts the awesome, pummeling smoke & smoke, a collaboration with the dudes of godheadsilo, and he gets his subtler aggressions out with triumph of lethargy skinned alive to death, a stripped down guitar and vocals (and occasional samples/noises) duo.

i guess that makes them all undead by christmas...

spank rock - put that pussy on me (diplo tonite remix)

i am definitely not a hip-hop dj. for one thing, i'm white, and i'm not into cultural appropriation (although i think it's fair to argue that, at this point, hip-hop has transcended any racial/cultural ghetto that it may have once inhabited). also, i know there are tons of hip-hop DJs that are way better than me, DJs that beat juggle, scratch, and basically hold it down for that genre. finally, it's just not my favorite music.

that said, there are some songs that are so fucking good i can't help but squeeze them into my set, and this track is definitely one of them. spank rock hails from baltimore, and he draws on miami bass, electro, and hip-hop to create some damn fine party music. diplo (maybe you heard of him, right) turns in a flawless remix, as usual. the remix 12" and the original 12" are both available from money studies. the remix 12" includes a couple other mixes, but this is definitely the stand-out track.

juliette & the licks - got love to kill (mstrkrft remix)

eric finally got off his ass and started posting tracks that we have all been trying to find and i guess we should thank him. once he realized that he can't give away all his trade secrets, he asked the rest of us to contribute. so, that's how you have me, dj never forget, posting from the strike infested world of nyc. we have started drinking in the office even though its 4 cause everyone is pretty worthless and do not want to think about the long walk home or how the fuck they are getting back tomorrow morning or get their shopping done or do whatever you need to do for the holidays. instead of working i spent the day downloading new tracks for my dj night in brooklyn finger on the pulse and i came across this amazing song.

for all of you who don't know there is this remix team called MSTRKRFT out there who is 1/2 dfa 1979. eric posted about the thank me with both hands track but its been hard to find other stuff. until now. they are releasing a whole remix cd in spring 2006 but you can get some of their stuff online such as the Bloc Party remix of two more years. Since you can find that one easily, I am going to post their Juliette and the Licks remix, a band I normally hate turned dirty dance punk dance floor killer. sorry if the websites are copy and paste i'm still learning this coding shit. I hope you enjoy it.

(i tried to nice things up a bit -eric)

welcome to fucking in the streets - the mp3 blog

first on the selector:

john starlight-john's addiction (part1)

this track is on heavy rotation for me right now. spare electro drums give way to dirty synth bass that'll stick in your head for days. think alter ego, only a little screwed. somebody inevitably asks me what this is when i play it out, so it seemed like a good choice for my inaugural post.

i'll try to update this pretty often if people are into it, so let me know what you think.

edit: i fucked up the link first time around, should work now.
